During the partition of India in 1947, West Bengal and East Bengal (which later became East Pakistan and then Bangladesh) were part of the undivided Bengal province. When India was partitioned, West Bengal remained part of India, while East Bengal became part of Pakistan. It was not until the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 that East Pakistan gained independence from Pakistan and emerged as the separate nation of Bangladesh.
Assam, on the other hand, is a separate state in northeastern India and was not part of the Bengal province. It remained a part of India after the partition.
The concept of "Greater Bangladesh" is not an officially recognized or pursued agenda by the governments of Bangladesh or India. It is important to differentiate between historical events and territorial claims or aspirations.
