The Lahore Resolution


The Lahore Resolution, also known as the Pakistan Resolution, was a pivotal moment in the history of the Indian subcontinent. It was passed on March 23, 1940, during the annual meeting of the All India Muslim League in Lahore, which was then a part of British India.

The Lahore Resolution called for the creation of an independent state for Muslims in the regions of British India where they constituted a majority, particularly in the northwest and northeastern parts of the country. The resolution sought to safeguard the political, economic, and cultural rights of Muslims in those areas and proposed a separate nation for them.

The adoption of the Lahore Resolution marked a significant step towards the eventual formation of Pakistan, which came into existence in 1947 when British India was partitioned into two independent countries: India and Pakistan. Pakistan, with two geographically separate regions known as East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (present-day Pakistan), became a homeland for Muslims in the subcontinent.

The Lahore Resolution played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape and the subsequent struggle for independence in the subcontinent, leading to the creation of Pakistan as a separate nation for Muslims.
